AK Natives Create New Political Organizations

Enduring Understandings

After contact with Western cultures, Alaska Native cultures gradually developed new political organizations.

Two class periods

Materials needed:
Link to Cultures unit narrative, Contact and Change section.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Ask students to complete the Political Relations Activityprior to reading.
  2. Following completion of the activity, refer the students to the Encyclopedia of North American Indians, Indian-White Relations in Alaska: Political Relations. Students can check their possible sentences, while they read this information about political relations during the 1867-1945 period.
  3. Students will access the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) web site to learn about the history of this organization and the role that AFN played in the resolution of Alaska Native land claims under the Alaska Native Land Claims Settle Act (1971). Both text and video clip are provided on this site. www.nativefederation.org
  4. Names mentioned on the AFN web site include: Willie Hensley, Albert Kaloa, Jr., Flore Lekanoff, Emil Notti, and Howard Rock. Ask students to conduct web searches to find additional information on two of these Alaska Native leaders and to write a biographical sketch of the individuals.
  5. Review Political Relations Activity and correct as necessary.
